Beatrix Potter the Scientist: The Fungi Research the Victorians Ignored
Here is a fact that reliably astonishes our American guests: before she was the author of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter was one of the most accomplished amateur mycologists in Britain – a self-taught scientist whose meticulous studies of fungi were presented to London's premier natural history society in 1897, brushed aside by the all-male scientific establishment, and finally honoured with a formal apology a full century later. Had Victorian science been a little less Victorian, we might remember her today as a pioneering researcher rather than a storyteller. The Lake District, wonderfully, is one of the few places on earth where you can see this hidden side of her with your own eyes.
A naturalist's childhood
Beatrix Potter's science began in the third-floor nursery of her London home, which she and her brother Bertram ran as a combination zoo, laboratory and studio. Rabbits, mice, bats, lizards, snails and a hedgehog named Mrs. Tiggy shared the schoolroom; specimens were observed, measured, drawn and – when nature took its course – boiled down and studied as skeletons. Her father, a keen amateur photographer with scientific friends, took her to the museums of South Kensington, where she drew fossils and insects for hours. By her teens she owned a microscope and was producing drawings of startling precision. This was not sentimental animal-fancying; it was training, and it explains why the creatures in her later books, for all their jackets and bonnets, are anatomically true.
Falling for fungi
The fungal obsession took hold on family holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, where damp autumn woods erupt with mushrooms and toadstools. In Perthshire she found a mentor in Charles McIntosh, a rural postman and brilliant self-taught naturalist, who corresponded with her for years, sending specimens and correcting identifications. Through the 1890s Beatrix produced hundreds of fungus portraits in watercolour – gills, spores, and all – that working mycologists still praise for their scientific accuracy. She did not stop at illustration: using her microscope she germinated spores, studied their development, and grew convinced of ideas that were then controversial, including the composite nature of lichens as a partnership between fungus and alga – a view mainstream British botany resisted at the time, and which is textbook science today.
1897: a paper at the Linnean Society
By 1896–97 Beatrix had original experimental findings on how fungal spores germinate, and she sought a hearing at the top: the Linnean Society of London, Britain's senior society for natural history. The obstacles she met tell you everything about a woman's position in Victorian science. At Kew Gardens, the botanical establishment received her findings with condescension. And when her paper, On the Germination of the Spores of the Agaricineae, was formally presented to the Linnean Society on 1 April 1897, Beatrix could not read it – or even sit in the room – because women were not admitted to meetings. It was read on her behalf by the mycologist George Massee. The minutes record the paper; no discussion followed; and Beatrix subsequently withdrew it, apparently intending revisions that never came. Within a few years her energies had turned to the little books, and science's loss became literature's gain.
The postscript is famous. In 1997, a hundred years on, the Linnean Society publicly acknowledged that Beatrix Potter had been treated shabbily – a posthumous apology that made headlines around the world and cemented her modern reputation as a symbol of women shut out of science. Her spore paper itself was lost, so its scientific claims cannot be fully judged; but her surviving drawings and journal leave no doubt of the quality of her observation.
Where to see her scientific work: the Armitt in Ambleside
Now for the treat. When Beatrix Potter died in 1943 she left her fungus drawings – hundreds of sheets, along with archaeological and other natural history studies – to the Armitt Museum and Library in Ambleside, a gem of a Victorian institution of which she and William Heelis were long-standing supporters. The Armitt cares for around 450 of her watercolours, and displays a selection alongside the story of her scientific life. Standing before them is a genuinely startling experience if you know only Peter Rabbit: these are cool, exact, beautiful botanical plates, some so accurate that mycologists have used them to identify species. Remarkably, several record fungi rare or seldom seen, making them of lasting scientific value. The Armitt sits in the centre of Ambleside – one of the two towns our tours depart from – and makes a perfect independent add-on to a Beatrix Potter day.
How the scientist made the storyteller
It would be a mistake to file science and storytelling in separate drawers, because the first made the second. The discipline of drawing a mushroom gill or a rabbit's hind leg exactly as it is gives her books their uncanny credibility: Jemima Puddle-Duck moves like a real duck, Squirrel Nutkin like a real squirrel, and the landscapes are portraits of real places accurate enough to navigate by today. Beatrix herself was impatient with slapdash nature art for children. Her hedgehog laundress, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, was drawn from her own hedgehog; her frog, Jeremy Fisher, from years of pond-watching. Even her farming career had a scientific cast – she corresponded on sheep diseases and championed veterinary research into the ailments of her beloved Herdwicks.
Follow the whole woman
The fungi episode is our favourite corrective to the greeting-card image of Beatrix Potter, and it lands especially well with visitors who care about women's history: a first-rate mind, denied a laboratory, that went on to conquer publishing, farming and conservation instead.
