The intense joy mingled with awe that I had in looking through the hollows in the mossy roots over the crag into the dark lake has associated itself more or less with all twining roots of trees ever since&#8221;.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-514\" style=\"width: 464px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-514\" src=\"https:\/\/englishlakestours.com\/around-and-about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Ruskin-Memorial-Friars-Crag-4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"John Ruskin Monument Friar's Crag Derwentwater\" width=\"464\" height=\"309\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ruskin&#8217;s first memory was of Friar&#8217;s Crag at Derwentwater in the northern lakes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ruskin, a pioneer of the protection of the unspoiled beauty of the&nbsp;Lake District, said that the view from Friars&#8217; Crag <em>&#8220;is one of the three or four most beautiful in Europe&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-518\" style=\"width: 951px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-518\" src=\"https:\/\/englishlakestours.com\/around-and-about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Friars-Crag-with-tree-roots-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Friar's Crag Derwentwater John Ruskin\" width=\"951\" height=\"1268\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The view of Derwentwater from Friar&#8217;s Crag showing tree roots which so impressed themselves onto Ruskin&#8217;s childhood memory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Much later his influential thinking on the preservation of historical monuments and buildings and the conservation of open spaces inspired two of his friends Canon Hardwicke Drummond Rawnsley and Octavia Hill, who was once an art pupil of his, to form the National Trust.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_515\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-515\" style=\"width: 401px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-515\" src=\"https:\/\/englishlakestours.com\/around-and-about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Ruskin-Memorial-Friars-Crag-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"John Ruskin Monument Friar's Crag Derwentwater inscription\" width=\"401\" height=\"534\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The inscription on the reverse of the Ruskin Monument at Friar&#8217;s Crag.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In turn, Canon Rawnsley&#8217;s views on the preservation of the natural beauty of the Lake District has a profound impact upon a young woman called Beatrix Potter. She spent many summers holidaying with her family at Derwentwater when she was writing her childrens books <em>The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny <\/em>and <em>The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-winkle<\/em>. When she died, Beatrix left 4000 acres of land 15 farms and 20 other houses and buildings to the National Trust.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_520\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-520\" style=\"width: 703px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-520\" src=\"https:\/\/englishlakestours.com\/around-and-about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Beatrix-Potter-and-father-with-Cannon-Rawnsley-2-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"Beatrix Potter Cannon Hardwick Drummomd Rawnsley\" width=\"703\" height=\"717\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beatrix Potter met Cannon Harwick Rawnsley and his son when she was a teenager on holiday in the Lake District in 1867.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u00a9 National Trust \/ Robert Thrift<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In October 1900, nine months after his death, a monument to Ruskin was unveiled just off the path to Friars&#8217; Crag. The driving force behind the erection of the Ruskin memorial was Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-521\" style=\"width: 462px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-521\" src=\"https:\/\/englishlakestours.com\/around-and-about\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Victorian-Art-Critic-John-Ruskin-CDV-Photo-Card-_57-2-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"John Ruskin Friar's Crag Derwentwater Brantwood Coniston\" width=\"462\" height=\"639\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Ruskin as a young man. His philosophy and writing is still hugely relevant to modern thinking.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ruskin was an immensely infulential and far-thinking art critic and writer during the latter part of the nineteenth century and his thoughts and philosophy still impact upon thousands of lives today.
