Hadrian's Wall from Penrith
Penrith is a historic red sandstone market town in Cumbria's Eden Valley, just outside the northeastern edge of the Lake District National Park. Its station, Penrith North Lakes, is on the West Coast Main Line, with direct trains from London and from Scotland, which makes it one of the easiest places in northern England to start a day on Hadrian's Wall.
From Penrith the central section of the Wall is about an hour's drive, closer than from anywhere in the Lake District. Our guide and driver meet you at Penrith North Lakes station, so you can step off the train and straight into the minivan, and take you to the Roman Army Museum, the fort and town at Vindolanda, Housesteads Roman Fort on its ridge and the dramatic crags at Steel Rigg, then bring you back at the end of the day. Admission to the Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda is included.
If you have time before or after your tour, the ruins of Penrith Castle stand in Castle Park, just across the road from the station. Built at the end of the 14th century to guard against Scottish raids, it was later home to Richard, Duke of Gloucester, before he became King Richard III.
